I made slow and steady progress on TORSO TENNIS during July. Small incremental progress is the norm for most of game development, but it gets tricky towards the end. There’s a lot of little details that need to be just right for launch. It’s tough to finish a game!

After struggling a bit with all the things that needed to be done, I had an idea to wrap the project up in a very unique way.

## TORSO TENNIS: The Final 120 Hours

TORSO TENNIS was originally prototyped during Global Game Jam 2024\. Over the course of 48 hours, the game went from **Idea** to **Playable Mess**.

I have relied on game jams for a long time for little bursts of motivation and to test out new project ideas. So, as I’ve been struggling to close out the last bugs and polish items on TORSO TENNIS, it dawned on me that a proper “jam” timeline might be just what I need to wrap the project up.

This week I will be sitting down for 5 days (120 hours) Monday - Friday to finish TORSO TENNIS in proper jam style. After that it will be playtesting, bug fixing, and releasing!

The next email you receive from me will contain the launch date for TORSO TENNIS!

## So how was July?

It was pretty good. Made some progress on TORSO TENNIS and I did a lot of biking.

I’ve been focused on running a Membership Drive to keep our local Indie Game Development office in North Carolina open.

I played Psychonauts 2 while watching the Tour de France.

I guess my wires got crossed playing games & watching bicycle racing because:

## Tour De France 2: The Sequel you’ve Been Waiting for

The Tour De France is a WILD sporting event. 21 Stages of bicycle racing covering around 2,200 miles (3,540 kilometers) in total. Teams of cyclists compete day after day in an absolutely brutal race through the picturesque French countryside. Each year, many cyclists drop out due to injury, illness, or fatigue.

My favorite thing about the Tour’s design as a competitive event is that there are multiple victory conditions. Some teams go for wins on individual stages, others shoot for one of the classifications below, each with their own cash prize.

- 🟨Yellow Jersey = General Classification - Best Overall Time
- 🟩Green Jersey = Points Classification - Best Time on Sprint Segments
- 🔴Polka Dots = Mountains Classification - Best Time on Climb Segments
- ⬜White Jersey =Young Rider Classification - Best Overall Time for Riders under 26 years old
- 🚴Team Classification - Best overall time for top 3 riders on a team

The cool thing about most of these classifications is you get to wear a special jersey while riding to designate that you are the current leader in that classification. This strikes me as something particularly videogame-y, like a rare skin or cosmetic (despite being something that predates videogames by decades). Imagine being geared out like this in your favorite battle royale.

That got me thinking, what sort of other classifications would I add if I were in charge of the race?

## Too Much Tomato’s Tour de France 2

After over 100 years, the sequel is finally here.

- ⬛Silver Jersey: Best Overall time for riders OVER the age of 35

> We don’t need to celebrate youth anymore as a culture. Enough 30 under 30 lists, celebrate our elder cyclists!

- ☺️Smiley Dot Jersey: Voted most likeable the previous day by other riders, immune to skull jersey while wearing.
- ☠️Skull Dot Jersey: Voted most unlikeable by other riders. You get ejected from the tour if you hold it 3 days in a row, but the prize purse is 3x the smiley dot jersey.

> There are already a lot of mind games going on in the tour, like sizing up your competition to see who has energy to sprint today and who is saving energy for the mountain stage tomorrow. It would be crazy to see teams getting political to try to avoid someone on their team getting voted off with the skull jersey.

- 🟥Red Jersey - most cumulative (involuntary) crashes over the tour.

> It sucks getting in crashes, I feel so bad for the riders. I think they deserve a little something special to acknowledge their misfortune. Although let’s hope this doesn’t encourage more accidents.

- 🐍Green-Scaley Jersey: Most cumulative time time spent standing off the bike saddle during the race. It’s green with sequins and shimmers when the riders stand up.
> *I’m a snaaaaake!*
- 🟫Brown Jersey: most cumulative hotdogs eaten in a 10 minute window after crossing the finish line.

> Look, the Tour de France is essentially an eating competition already. Riders are consuming somewhere around 8000 calories to replenish from their daily efforts. Let’s bring some of this eating into the public eye and into the competitive nature of the ride. It doesn’t have to be hot dogs, I just want to see these boys EAT!

Thanks for indulging me in this silly exercise and let me know your own DLC ideas for Tour de France 2.
